In her first ever speech, Jacqui called for a Royal Commission into veteran suicide. Seven years later, she delivered it.
It took blood, sweat, tears — and you. We called on the Australian public to back us in the fight, and more than 100,000 people took action. We ran ads in marginal seats. We organised rallies. We started petitions. Jacqui’s speeches on the subject were watched on social media more than two million times.
We pulled together a full-page ad in two separate newspapers signed by 40 prominent Australians, including a former Royal Commissioner herself.
Everything we did was people-powered.
Scott Morrison declared it would never happen in February 2020. In April 2021, he finally admitted defeat.
It wasn’t one person who beat the Prime Minister. It was all of us.
The Royal Commission won’t work without us
The suicides didn’t stop the day we won the Royal Commission. They’re still happening. We’re still losing a veteran a week.
The success or failure of the Royal Commission in doing something about it depends on whether we can take advantage of this once-in-a-century chance to actually change things.

If we had a government that cared about protecting veterans instead of protecting itself, Jesse Bird might be alive today. He asked the Department of Veterans’ Affairs for help. They rejected him. He died, alone, completely broke, his rejection letter on the floor.

The Royal Commission is an opportunity:
It's up to us to take it
Royal Commissions don’t work without governments willing to implement their recommendations. And governments don’t do things unless they think there’s votes in it for them.
We have to show them that there are voters who are paying attention to what they do next. We have to show them that we are not going to go away.
And if they don’t do what’s right, we’re waiting with baseball bats.
The more people we can mobilise to swing into action, the more pressure we can put on the major parties. If there’s one thing we should learn by the experience of campaigning to deliver the Royal Commission, it is that the major parties won’t do anything without a fight. We have to show them we’re up for the fight.
